Bothyrops alternatus
The Urutu Pitviper is relatively common in the Ibera Marshes. It is highly venemous and can cause death if not treated quickly. It can certainly cause severe tissue damage.
It is found in marshy areas, sometimes in water, and is a capable swimmer.
It can grow to 2m in length but is usually smaller, at around 1m. The colour is a muddy grey-green with kidney shaped markings bordered with cream and a notable cross on the head. The patttern is variable and probably each snake has its own unique pattern.
