The Solitary Black Cacique is a very vocal bird, the calls sometimes resembling those of a parrot. It is a forest dweller but is always tempted onto our bird feeders by fruit. It belongs to the Icteridae family.

This is a large passerine of around 25cm, totally black with a long tail and an ivory coloured bill.

The nests are spectacular like others in the genus and consist of a criss-cross of plant material, fibres interwoven together hanging from a branch. They can be a much as a meter in length and have a small entrance so the adult can get in to feed the juveniles.

This bird regularly comes to our bird feeders when we put out fruit.
