The Limpkin is common in the Ibera marshes and is in a family of its own – Aramidae.

It has a very loud call which can be heard from almost a kilometer away.  It is a large bird of 55cm resembling an Ibis.  It feeds on molluscs and can be seen regularly perching in trees, usually calling loudly.

It is predominantly dark brown with white streaking along the neck and upper back.   It has a long thick bill with a yellow cere and long grey legs.

It has an unusual manner of flying in that it flaps the wings upward.
