The Guira Cuckoo is a gregarious bird in the Cuculidae family.  It is common throughout most of Argentina.

It forms noisy groups and is almost never seen alone.  It measures around 35cm

It has whitish underparts with brown streaking on the throat and breast.  Upperparts are dark with streaks and it has a long tail which is tricoloured, with white at the tip.

The head is covered by a shaggy crown and the bill is orange.  LIke most South American cuckoos this species is non parasitic.

They often nest communally and sometimes the juveniles can be seen lined up together on a tree limb – sometimes up to 20.
