Bubo virginianus
This is the largest owl in Argentina and it can be found in forests and savannahs. It is also found throughout the Americas and has a vast range due to its adaptability. Although widespread, it is not common and usually heard rather than seen by its distinctive low frequency hoots.
It has long ear-tufts and an orange iris. The body is barred pale brown with a white throat It can only be confused with the Magelanaic Horned Owl which has a completely different range.
It is known as Nacurutu in Argentina.
