Colaptes campestris
This beautiful woodpecker is almost abundant in the Ibera Marshes. It is unusual for a woodpecker in that it is normally found on the ground, often on anthills, but it can also be seen pecking at tree trunks and branches.
It is quite a large woodpecker at about 28cm with a bright yellow face, neck and upper breast. The rest of it is predominantly barred black and whitish with the wings and back slightly darker than the underparts. It has a black crown and the male has a red malar.
The female is similar but has a black malar in place of a red one.
