The Epaulet Oriole is fairly common at our reserve and is usually found eating the fruit in our native trees.  They scurry around the tree often hanging upside down in pairs or groups.  It is part of the Icteridae family.

It has a pleasant call and is quite confiding and measures about 18cm partially due to the long tail.

Sexes are alike and the overall colour is matte black with a long tail and longish pointed bill.  There is a rufous splash on the shoulder area which is sometimes concealed.

This bird will also come to our hummingbird nectar feeders and consume the sugar solution.
