Harpyhaliaetus coronatus
The Crowned Eagle of South America is considered ‘Endangered’ according to the IUCN redlist. I know of one former nest in the Ibera Marshes which may or may not be still in use but other than that these birds are very rare.
It is part of the family accipitridae and threats to this bird come from the usual habitat loss as well as persecutiion and hunting.
This is a large raptor of 70cm (female) and about 10cm smaller for the male. The bird is brownish gray overall with darker wings. It has a black tail with a white band. The legs are powerful and yellow and it has a yellow cere and a lighter throat.
