Protecting Our Symbol: The Strange-tailed Tyrant
We’re delighted to have a strong population of strange-tailed tyrants at the reserve. So much so that we’ve adopted these beautiful and endangered birds as the symbol of the Trust
About Campaign
This is a ground nesting bird, considered Vulnerable in the IUCN redlist, which is in need of protection. Our reserve provides the perfect habitat for this bird as we do not have cattle trampling over potential nesting sites, we use no pesticides nor chemicals, and we do not routinely burn the land for grass improvement. We remove invasive species such as non-native pines (self-seeded from our neighbours). Our reserve is there for our fauna and flora, and we do all we can to protect it from fires, invasives and invasions from neighbouring cattle.
In 2022 during a 3 year drought, we had fire sweeping through the land which destroyed a lot of our fencing, and allowed cattle to break through into our pristine land. We have around 8km of fencing to repair, some of which has been done, but there is a lot outstanding.
Donation Details
Please consider donating toward helping this iconic bird to survive, in order we can achieve the following:
- Help maintain our habitat by repairing fences burnt in wildfires of 2022, in order to keep out neighbour's cattle. At times we have seen over 100 cattle from various neighbours invading our reserve. This is very detrimental to breeding of this species. Due to climate change, we need to cut or burn areas that are vulnerable to wildfires. This is done in late autumn, early winter after nesting is completed.
- Start a project to study the Strange-tailed Tyrant. This bird is considered a migrant, but very few studies have been made.
- Help with costs of bird ringing project using coloured rings (as well as metal ones). We will need to invite a ringing expert, buy nets and rings. Also invite volunteers to assist. GPS tagging is a possibility in the future, but they are currently too heavy for this species.
- Study the breeding habits of this species and some of our other endangered species such as the Ibera Seedeater, using volunteers and camera traps.

Join Our Mission
Our mission is to preserve and protect the diverse habitats of endangered species, with a focus on the North East Argentina region, particularly the Esteros del Iberá wetlands. By acquiring and managing private land, we aim to conserve this vital ecosystem, home to over 330 species of birds and numerous threatened mammals. We are dedicated to ongoing research, reintroduction projects, and the expansion of our reserve to ensure the survival of these species. We seek support through donations, volunteer work, and collaborations with conservationists and biologists to further our efforts in safeguarding this unique and precious environment.
