The Anhinga is from the Anhingidae family and resembles the Cormorant.  These birds are usually seen alongside the banks of rivers or swamps, perched in a high tree looking for fish.  They are known as the Snake bird as they have a very long neck which can look like a snake.

They are colony breeders and often spread their wings as in the picture above when at rest.  They have a long sharp bill which is used for stabbing prey.  Their distinguishing feature is the silvery markings on their wings, otherwise the bird is shiny black.

The female is distinct in that she has a pale head, neck and breast.
