Chauna torquata
The Southern Screamer is common in the Ibera Marshes and breeds there, sometimes more than once in a year. It is perfectly adapted for this area and the loud screaming call is often heard in the area.
This is a large heavy bird of around 85cm which is equally at home flying as it is swimming. It is unmistakeable with its thick red legs, dark grey upperparts and lighter grey speckled underparts. It has a distinctive collar with a band of black under a band of white. It has a large red eyepatch and a spiky crest.
Chicks are born orange and the brood is beween 2 and 4. They are very protective parents.
