This Nightjar is relatively rare in Argentina although little is known about the species.  It is considered Near Threatened in the IUCN red-list and has a small range of NE Argentina, Southeast Paraguay, Uruguay and Southeast Brazil.

It prefers humid grasslands and is sometimes seen roosting on top of an ant or termite hill.  The photo above and below is of a female or immature bird.

It has a short tail and lacks the usual pale collar band.The wing is an unusual shape designed to make flapping noices to attract the female.  The primaries of the male are black. 

The primaries of the female are cinnamon barred black and she has a narrow white neckband.
