Dasypus septemcinctus
This is the smallest of the 3 species of armadillo that exist in the Ibera marshes. It lives in open fields and like the other armadillos, builds burrows in the earth. Length is about 40cm and it has noticeable pointed ears and short legs. The body armour consists of two plates which are joined by the moveable 7 bands.
This species is crepuscular as we saw it near to the houses in an open area at least 30 minutes before sunset. It may also be nocturnal and is thought to be solitary.
It is thought to feed on ants and termites.
It is known as Mulita chica in Argentina and we have many at our reserve.
