These Cardinals are very common at the reserve and in Northern and Central Argentina in general.

They are about the size of a Waxwing and have very clear markings. The red hood/crest extends down the chest onto white underparts.  The back and wings are grey and the bill pale.

Male and female are similar but the juveniles maintain a more brownish crest for at least 6 months.  Usually seen together in pairs the male regularly attacks windows and mirrors in response to his reflection.  They breed in nests made in trees and usually have 2 offspring which stay with the adults for up to 9 months.
