This small compact Grebe is uncommon in the Ibera marshes. It is always found on bodies of water and, like other Grebes, hunts aquatic invertibrates and small fish/amphibians under water. In fact, they spend more time underwater than above.

The colouration is mottled dark grey and it has a striking pale bill with a dark ring around it. The crown is dark and it has a black throat. The eye has a pale ring around it.
