Sporophila iberaensis
We have seen this seedeater at the reserve since we arrived in 2010, sometimes in large flocks in winter, although it now appears to be a resident. It has recently been declared a new species and given the name Sporophila iberensis or Ibera Seedeater. It is reasonable common around the reserve especially near the houses and in the south.
It appears to be a hybrid between the Dark-throated Seedeater and the Tawny-bellied Seedeater.
It has a grey crown, brown throat and nape, a pale chest and belly and a typical seedeater’s bill. The female looks like all of the Sporophila females.
