Icterus cayanensis
The Epaulet Oriole is fairly common at our reserve and is usually found eating the fruit in our native trees. Â They scurry around the tree often hanging upside down in pairs or groups. Â It is part of the Icteridae family.
It has a pleasant call and is quite confiding and measures about 18cm partially due to the long tail.
Sexes are alike and the overall colour is matte black with a long tail and longish pointed bill. Â There is a rufous splash on the shoulder area which is sometimes concealed.
This bird will also come to our hummingbird nectar feeders and consume the sugar solution.
