Pachyramphus validus
The Crested Becard is a migrant that nests in Argentina and migrates north in the winter. It is a member of the Cotingidae family. Unusually for birds, it is the female that is the more attractive.
This bird nests at our reserve although it is not common. It is usually seen mid to high level in the trees.
The male has a black or dark grey upperparts with a black crown which he raises at times. The underparts are pale grey.
The female has bright rufous upperparts and a pale cinnamon breast. She also has a dark grey cap which reaches below the eyes.
