We occasionally see this brightly patterned woodpecker around the Ibera Marshes although we have not yet seen it at our reserve.

The colours are predominantly brown and white with the underparts white streaked blackish.  The back and wings are brown with white spots and the male only has a red spot on his nape.  The head has a dark crown running from the forehead to the nape with a white supercilium and malar.
