We quite often see the American Kestrel in our garden and around the reserve.

This stunning little falcon measures only 25cm in length.  The male has the typical moustache associated with the Falco genus and is brightly coloured with blue/grey head and primaries, white throat and white speckled grey breast.  The back is pinkish  with a spotting affect from black & white tipped feathers, and the tail and rump are red.

Sexual dimorphism is apparant in this species with the female slightly larger and less brightly coloured.
