The Smooth-billed Ani is relatively widespread in the Ibera Marshes, being seen mainly in spring and summer. They are noisy birds and usually seen in small family groups.

The most distinctive feature is the large, curved black bill, that dominates the face. The bird is all black with a purple sheen to the feathers. The tail is long and the face has a scruffy appearance.
