Nyctidromus albicollis
The Paraque is found in each of our small woodlands and can be seen at dusk jumping from ground level to catch prey. You can sometimes see it during the day whilst walking around the woodlands as it will fly a short distance on disturbance. It has a lovely repetitive call which you can hear in spring and summer around dusk.
In flight the most noticeable feature is its long black and white tail as well as the flash of white under its wings near the wing tips.
It is larger than most of our nightjars at around 28cm including the tail and it has a white throat. Otherwise the colour is predominantly mottled brown.
