This small member of the Canid family stands about 40cm at the shoulder and has dense, short fur which is predominantly grey.  It has a long black tip to the tail and a black muzzle.

It tends to spend most of its time in the open grassland areas of the reserve, where it is quite common.  These are social pack animals which tolerate humans quite well especially if food is available.

They are generally nocturnal and are opportunist feeders, surviving on a variety of food including small mammals, fruit, amphibians and reptiles.
