Dark-throated Seedeater
The Dark-throated Seedeater (Sporophila ruficollis) is occasionally found on our reserve particularly in the spring. We have also seen juveniles so it probably breeds there too.
It measures 9cm, has a plumbeous crown and upper back and a large black throat which extends to its upper chest. The female looks like all other Sporophila females.
This Sporophila is classed as NT (near threatened) on the IUCN redlist.
Threats are the usual habitat loss as well as pesticides and cagebird trade.
We are hoping to attract more Sporophila species to the reserve by setting aside areas for them that include their favourite grasses.
