This bat is the largest in Argentina and is second largest in South America.  It is found in dense forest and thus is difficult to capture.  We managed to catch this species low in various single nets and have also had success using a Harp trap. We have never encountered this species in Corrientes but come across it regularly in the north of Misiones.

It is carniverous and its diet includes small birds, amphibians, reptiles and rodents.  It is believed that it also eats fruit on occasion.

It is large and strong with long woolly dark grey fur, almost unicolour with frosted tips.  It has long well seperated ears that resemble mussel shells with pink interiors and a small tragus.  The forearm is usually over 80mm. Weight can be over 100g.
